Day 5

Art of Cooking day 5

Our inclement weather crisis (a bit of ice on the roads) had prevented us from going to school for the first two weekdays, so we lost a few days of J-Term. Once we got to school, we had also learned that we would not be able to go to Recipe for Success because their pipes froze. Thankfully, we had a contingency plan: barbecue. We made a trip to the store to assemble the ingredients, took about an hour doing so, and returned with excitement as many of us were anxious to finally cook meat.

Our goal was to make a good meal on our own, a challenging task indeed. We began with some of us making barbecue sauce and the rest of us seasoning and preparing our chicken in whatever experimental ways we could think of. Allspice, honey, rosemary, mustard, chili powder, etc. If it could be construed as possibly tasty, we probably did it. We brought out a grill from somewhere, and started preparing the great chicken roasting ritual.

Meanwhile, we prepared salsa with a classic mortar and pestle and made some guacamole to go with our inadequate amount of chips.

We had some potatoes on the grill as well, which we took off long before they were actually done, either because we had misjudged the cooking time or because the chicken gods had to be appeased lest they curse us with salmonella for the rest of our days. I have a suspicion that it was the former, but what do I know, someone could've been clued in to our impending demise by muscle ache and fever. We then grilled the chicken. Because of the different coverings and start times of each of our chicken bits, we had a sort of flow of fowl to our plates, getting to try each new variety as it came off the grill. then we put the potatoes back on the grill while we enjoyed chicken with a side of dip and too few chips. once the potatoes were done, they were quite tasty except for the odd undercooked slice.

Our adventure into animal protein was a fun time. those of us that didn't have prior experience got to understand barbecue, and we were all a bit starved for a nice chicken meal.
